Local Food in Tawau Sabah

Took a flight to Tawau in Sabah, Malaysia

Tawau is a town by the sea where you could find cheap and fresh seafood. It also has a big fish market (Pasar Ikan Tawau market) at the town.

Things we do in Tawau is cheap seafood, jungle trekking, and swimming at the beach located further away from the town. The sea water at beach near Tawau town is murky if you want clearwater beach you could go island hopping in Semporna (a district located in Tawau). There are boat rides for island hopping at the Semporna Jetty.

I went to one of the reserved forest for jungle trekking which I do not want to double post here. It alrdy been posted before at this link :

Rainforest with gigantic trees

There are some plantation estates open for visitors at:

Below, some cheap and good local food we had in Tawau town :

big green plate : Yau Char Kwai / You Tiao 油條 with Kaya fillings
I find the you tiao in Tawau special because at my town, our you tiao has no fillings in it.
The other pastries in the picture are nothing special (from left cake, curry puff, and siew bao)

Crab vermicelli noodles
The seafood here is cheap and fresh. They even have crab noodles

Flower Crab at Semporna, Sabah near the Semporna jetty

Tea Leaf Egg in Tawau

Sweet tea leaf egg dessert. It's my favorite drink in Tawau. The hard boiled chicken egg is brownish color caused by the color of the black tea.

Ikan Bakar (stingray grilled with spice on banana leaf)

All the seafood in Tawau town is quite fresh.
We chose the stingray we want for the chef to cook at the Ikan Bakar stall.

Picture above, grilled stingray meat

Heong Dai Mai Fun Noodles 香底米粉 (crispy noodle with gravy)
The crispy noodles sold here is a little different from the ones in my town. I'm not used to the oily gravy it's a little too oily for me. The gravy is different too.

Fish Noodle
Fish with crispy noodles. I like the fish they are cheap and fresh

Huo Tie 鍋貼 (Meat Dumplings) I like the meat dumplings in Tawau. They are generous with the meat and their dumplings are bigger. We dipped the dumplings in vinegar and ginger sauce.

干捞面 Gan Lao Mian (Noodles with fried pork and barbequed pork)
I like this too.
